Original Art work by Benjamin Martin- self portrait holding pencils, creativity taking over

About the Artist

I've been drawing since before I could explain why. I started with a pencil, just letting whatever was in my head find its way onto the paper. I used it to express and expell my feelings about the interactions I had with the people around me.

I'm self-taught, which basically means I never learned the rules, so I never felt like I had to follow them. What came out instead was something organic, part cartoon, part surreal, part "what is that thing and why does it have a face?" That's kind of my signature.

These days, I work with pencil first, then bring the pieces to life digitally with colour. The pencil work is where the soul is and the colour is where it gets it's mood. I like to think of it as the art remixes.

I'm based in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and I create because I can't imagine not. Every piece has a meaning, a story, something hiding in it that not everyone catches the first time. That's intentional. Come back and look again, there's always more in there.
